“Mother? Ma! It’s Charleston. Please answer. I need to

talk to you about the party.”

“Honey? How are you?” I winced at her voice blasting

from my comm system.

“Ma, you don’t have to yell. Just speak normally.”

“Oh, sorry, dear. I’m still getting used to this.”

“No problem.” I finished my beer, tried to cover a belch,

and took a deep breath. “Ma, tell me you didn’t send out any

invitations.”

She laughed. “Of course not, sweetheart.”

I let out the breath I’d been holding.

“I had one of my lab assistants help me compose and

send a text message to everyone on your contact list.”

“W-Wha…?”

“Oh, don’t sound so shocked. I only needed a little help

with it. I couldn’t get the holographic keyboard to readjust to

the proper size for my fingers, but I’m not completely inept in

these things. I gave them the date, time, place, and reason. It

will be so much fun. You know your father and I feel so

badly—”

I didn’t hear anything after that.
